HIS-391 Historical Materials: Historical Document Analysis

Historians analyze primary sources as the foundation for the creation of reliable narratives about the past. This course leads advanced students through the process of creating webs of documentation, context, and historical analysis by focusing on one long, complex, multi-faceted historical document to produce an annotated product that reveals, explains, and puts in context a preselected historical document under examination.

Students undertaking this exercise in historical contextualization and interpretation require the skills and knowledge acquired in HIS-270.
