Forensic Chemistry Specialization

The Forensic Chemistry Specialization is for students who are interested in the analysis of evidence as carried out by law enforcement agencies and crime laboratories. Through this coursework, students will gain practical experience with the sample handling, analytical techniques, and advanced instrumentation currently used in leading forensics laboratories. This specialization is an excellent foundation for forensics careers in local, regional, and national law enforcement agencies, including the state police, DEA, ATF, and FBI.

Nucleic Acids Study (4 credits)

Complete one of the following courses and its associated lab, which provides exposure to the handling and analysis of nucleic acids. In some cases, the content covered in BIOL-3805 Research Methods and Techniques will cover essential nucleic acid content and can be used to fulfill this requirement upon the approval of the Chemistry Department chair.

Internship (1-4 credits)

Complete a 1-4 credit internship in a forensics laboratory, or in a setting which provides experience in similar techniques and instrumentation, as approved by the Chemistry Department chair.
