PHIL-1000 Introduction to Philosophy

(TEXTS & CONTEXTS, ENGAGING DIFFERENCE) A general introduction to philosophy. In this course, we will apply logic and critical reasoning to explore topics, questions, and problems in the history of philosophy. Topics may include: What is philosophy? Is philosophy more like ballet or dance? What are the logical foundations and methods of philosophy? What makes a good logical fallacy? What are the origins of philosophy? What similarities and differences exist between philosophies in different historical and cultural contexts? Who are some of the main philosophical figures and influences around the world? What are some of the key topics and questions in philosophy? For instance, what is knowledge, justice, virtue, the self, mind, or God? How do we make sense of meaning and existence? How should we live and treat each other?
